Bono joins D’banj, others for ‘Strong Girl’ remix
Paul Hewson, popularly known as U2 frontman Bono, has collaborated with African male artists in a remix to the female empowerment song, ‘Strong Girl’. Initially, a song with an entirely female line-up, the new ‘Strong Girl’ features Nigerian singers D’Banj and Banky W, alongside Tanzanian act Diamond Platnumz.
‘Strong Girl’ is a product of One Campaign, intended to increase awareness for issues facing women and girls. ‘We must seize this opportunity to refocus the development agenda,’ said Sipho Moyo, One’s Africa Executive Director, ‘and unleash the human, social, political and economic potential of women everywhere.’
Singers Yemi Alade, Victoria Kimani, Vanessa Mdee, Selmor Mtukudzi were among the female singers on the earlier campaign, with the original song released in May. Nollywood actress Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde featured as well. With the forthcoming male version, the notion of female empowerment spreads to the other gender, implying that everyone is affected by the disproportionate injustice and poverty experienced by one gender. As the campaign puts it, 'poverty is sexist.'
Thus the goal of the campaign is eliminating poverty. To achieve this the campaign promotes structural and policy changes.
As co-founder of the campaign and featured singer on the remix, Bonoo visited Nigeria in August, where he met with artists on the One campaign line-up and visited the new Africa shrine to see a performance by Femi Kuti, scion of Afrobeat maestro Fela.
