Collaboration by SA and Nigerian artists hits the global scene
“All Eyes On Me”, a collaboration by South African rapper AKA and Nigerian singer Burna Boy, is making waves on the global music scene. The hip-hop track, which also features South African rappers Da L.E.S and JR, was recently play-listed on BBC 1Xtra after spending more than 8 weeks at No. 1 on the iTunes Hip-Hop Chart for South Africa.
BBC Radio 1Xtra is a digital radio station that broadcasts from the United Kingdom to millions of people across the globe. The playlisting comes after AKA’s 2014 nomination by BBC’s DJ Edu as one of the top 5 African artists to break into the UK industry in 2015.
The collaboration between AKA and Burna Boy comes at a time when many Southern African Artists are strengthening ties with their West African counterparts. Other notable artists who have recently collaborated include Banky W and L’Tido on the track “It ain’t my fault”, Simba Tags (Zimbabwe) and Ice Prince on “Don't Leave”, Ab Crazy, Ice Prince, Emmy Gee, Cassper Nyovest, Phyno, Anatii and DJ Dimplez on the remix of “Rands and Nairas” , Davido and Mafikizolo on “Tchelete” and M.anifest and HHP on “Jigah” .
AKA is reportedly in Nigeria on a promo tour that will likely culminate in more collaborations with artists from West Africa.
“All eyes on me” is AKA’s fourth consecutive no.1 single off his chart-topping iTunes SA album, LEVELS. When the hit song debuted it shot straight to no.1 on iTunes SA Hip Hop Chart and is now enjoying its ninth week at the top spot. The music video has also done well,topping chats on Channel O, MTV Base and Trace TV. Watch the video below.
