Bashayi Bengoma Ensemble

Bio

Bashayi Bengoma Ensemble is an ensemble of traditional Swazi music performed by artists from across Swaziland who gather to perform old and news songs. Their lyrics poetically speak about life, love and beauty. They play a variety of local instruments and perform to an appreciative audience in the amphitheater. Most women who are part of the music outfit play an instrument called a Makayane, a bow with a gourd attached to the staff. Apparently, women put their breast inside the opening of the gourd, sucking it in to create a seal to get a better tonal sound. They then beat the string with a baton.

On 21 September 2015, the group released a debut album titled 'Bashayi Bengoma'. The album was recorded live at the Alliance Française, Mbabane in 2014. The recording was made possible with the generosity of Swazi Candles, Kabili Books, and Planning and Design Consultants. It was mixed by Cara Stacey.
