Ethiopia Collections (Archive of Folk Culture)

Bio

The Ethiopia Collections were compiled by Reinhardt Schuhmann, Kenneth Schweitzer, and Jud Wellington. There are stored at the Archive of Folk Culture in the Library of Congress, Washington D.C., in the U.S. The collection has a number of recorded materials from Africa, two 10-inch tapes of West African and Ethiopian folk music recorded by Mr. and Mrs. Edward C. Sweeney; one tape containing a recording of the St. Ethiopian Coronation Anniversary, a 30 minutes recording was done on 3 November 1955.

There are twenty 10-inch tapes of sacred and secular music of Ethiopia recorded by Halim El-Dabh in 1964. The collection includes a four-paged log with descriptions of song content. (43 hours; LWO 4747) (AFS 12,374-12,395).

Lastly, there are ten 5-inch tapes of selections from African Studies Collection, a tape-slide series recorded and photographed by George J. Volger and produced by Imperial International Learning Corporation. The tapes feature Ethiopian music, Timkat ceremonies, history of the Coptic Church, Rock-hewn churches of Lalibela, Masai and Kikuyu music, African music and musical instruments, Bantu music, Zulu music, musical instruments, native musical compositions and an interview with Hugh Tracey.
