Ethnomusicology Musical Instrument Collection (University of Washington)

Bio

Founded in 1962, University of Washington Ethnomusicology Division has over 400 music instruments from around the world. Each year the division invites international artists to the campus to share their music traditions through teaching and performance.

Since 1963, the University of Washington Ethnomusicology Archives has collected field recordings, live concert recordings, films and videos from a variety of music events. The collection has nearly 10 000 tapes and discs avail¬able for listening and researchers may obtain copies of some materials for their work.

The Archives employs a number of students while working informally with most ethnomusicology students using recording format options, equipment purchase, practical problems of documentation in the field and other issues related to their research. Stu¬dents and researchers are encouraged to donate their field collections in the Archives, offering secure storage and computer access to all materials.

The digitized images in the music instrument database are intended for educational and instructional use. Downloading of audio or video examples is not allowed.
