International Camel Derby

This is a Kenyan festival that is gaining worldwide popularity. Held every year in the northern region of the country, this is an exciting event that displays a blend of action, adventure, color and culture in Kenya. First started in 1990, the International Camel Derby has given Kenyan people an ideal way to highlight the booming desertification.

Camel races are divided into 2 main categories; amateurs and novices and races are spread out over several days. Tourists can also watch cycling races, donkey rides, and other challenging events and can even hire a camel for a whole day.

The event promotes Samburu culture, peace, tourism, environmental conservation, and economy of the Samburu nomadic pastoralist people.Samburu Maralal International Camel Derby is an annual festive event held every august at Yare Camel Camp. It attracts participants from all over the world. It invlolves races/competitions on camels, foot and bicycles.

It is situated in North Kenya 2km south of Maralal Town on the main Nyahururu road. It has a large campsite and 15 self contained bandas- single, double and twin bed accommodation. The 42 seated restaurant, 24 seated coffee/bar lounge, and 18 seated barbeque/coffee/bar garden, 40 seated conference room, have good view. All bandas have verandahs with traditional table and chairs.
