Malipenga Dances

Bio

Malipenga Dances is a form of dance found in the northern regions of Malawi. It is dance music of the Tonga people of Nyasaland, now called Malawi. Reports suggest that it originated through imitations of military drills, substituting singing horns kazoolike instruments for military brass instruments. Their music was first recorded by Hugh Tracey in 1957. The recordings were made in mining compounds in Zambia and South Africa. The dances are done in every month of August in many districts of the country such Karong, Rumphi and Nkhatabay.
