Metropolitan Museum of Art

Bio

Founded by a group of American residents on 13 April 1870 in Paris, France, Metropolitan Museum of Art is an institution and gallery of art that was created to bring art and art education to the American people. The Union League Club in New York rallied civic leaders, businessmen, artists, art collectors, and philanthropists to help in the cause.

The institute is a collection of approximately five thousand music instruments from six continents and the Pacific Islands that date as far back as 300 B.C. to the present. The collection illustrates the development of music instruments from all cultures and eras. The instruments are selected for their technical and social importance and their tonal and visual beauty. They are categorised in various ways such as art objects, ethnographic record and as documents of historical importance.

More than 800 objects are displayed in the museum’s André Mertens Galleries for Musical Instruments, with one hall devoted to Western instruments and the other to non-Western instruments. Among the instruments on display are rare Asian and African instruments made of precious materials.

The museum is open to members of the public from Sunday to Thursday at 10h00am until 17h30pm. On Friday and Saturday, it is open from 10h00am until 21h00pm.
