South African Music Collection (University of Pretoria)

Bio

The University of Pretoria Music Library came into existence in 1960. Today the library’s collections include books, serials, sheet music, cd's, gramophone records, DVD's and videos. The library also houses one of the university’s special collections, the South African Music Collection which includes Dr FZ van der Merwe collection, a medical doctor with an interest in the identification, collection and preservation of South African sheet music. His collection now forms the basis of the F Z van der Merwe Sheet Music Collection. This collection is also arguably the largest and most comprehensive collection of South African sheet music in the world.

Another is the collection of Professor Stefans Grové, who was one of South Africa’s best known composers. Grove was involved in the university’s music department since 1973. After his retirement in 2002 Grove decided to donate all his compositions to the Africana Music Collection to the university.

The library is open on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday at 07h30 until 19h00pm, Tuesday at 08h30am until 19h00pm, Friday at 07h30am until 16h00pm and Saturdays from 09h00am until 13h00pm.
