The Spring Day Music Explosion was conceptualised by DJ Pepsi (Nkululeko Mdlongwa) and DJ Mahoota (Zynne Sibika), two prominent artists and DJs at the forefront of South Africa’s urban music scene. The event started in 2001 with just a single show, growing to an 11-city tour in 2011 to celebrate 10 years. In 2013 there were five shows: Pretoria, Bloemfontein, Newcastle, Rustenburg and Nelspruit.
It is a hotly anticipated event, with performances representing the pinnacle of the South African music industry from house to hip-hop and kwaito. International artists who have taken part include Tortured Soul, Monique Bingham, And Byron Stingly and Cabo Snoop. The tour has a core line-up of entertainers known as The Face of the Event. These artists and DJs perform in all or most of the shows. They are supported by a different line-up at each venue. This ensures that each show will be unique and thus promotes the travelling of fans between shows.
Major sponsors for 2011 were SABC1, SABC Radio, PRASA (Translux) and The Gauteng Department of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation. This resulted in our shows receiving tremendous coverage across all media: television, radio and print. We expect this media partnership to continue. All are on board for 2013. Tens of thousands of fans attended the shows. They represented a wide cross-section of South African society: between the ages of 18 and 45 years of age, all races, students, graduates and entrepreneurs.
