Isulam The Guitarist
Bio
Isulam The Guitarist (Thomas Jnr Matlaila) is a South African guitarist, composer and creative producer from Limpopo, whose work explores the intersection of Afro-fusion, soul, rock and contemporary African music. His sound is rooted in groove, emotion and storytelling, using the guitar as both a rhythmic foundation and melodic voice.
He began his musical journey during his school years, where he met his mentor, Erik Paliani — a Malawian-born guitarist, producer and musical director, best known for his work with Hugh Masekela, Zamajobe, and his own acclaimed album Chitukutuku. Under Paliani’s guidance, Isulam developed both his technical ability and a deeper understanding of musicality, discipline and artistic identity.
Together, they initiated and curated music events in Limpopo aimed at bridging the gap between emerging and established musicians. These platforms brought together experienced artists such as Tlale Makhene, Leeroy Sauls and others, creating spaces for collaboration, mentorship and knowledge exchange within the local music community.
As his career evolved, Isulam began building his identity as a solo artist while also forming the Afro-funk band String Theory alongside Stephen Krown. Through this project, he continues to refine his sound and stage presence, delivering energetic performances that merge groove, improvisation and cultural expression.
Beyond performance, Isulam is the founder of Isulam Productions and curator of the Tales of the Baobab Arts Festival, initiatives focused on strengthening the creative economy through collaboration, skills development and access to platforms.
His body of work includes the LP Behind The Guitar, a reflective project that explores personal growth, social themes and spiritual grounding through sound.
Currently, Isulam is preparing for the release of his upcoming single, “Who Are The People.” The track invites listeners to question identity, belonging and their place within society and the natural world.
