The University Gospel Choir of the Year (UGCY) competition is headed to Ghana. After a successful staging of the event in the UK, its organisers have launched a version that would see a finale taking place in Accra.
For the Ghanaian edition, the event will be shown on television in the reality show format over 4-6 weeks. The show will provide viewers with an opportunity to follow the competition from the auditions to the emergence of a winner.
The UGCY is designed as a platform to show budding musical talents, develop those talents while presenting them to a national audience. Already the UK winners have performed on X Factor and Britain’s Got Talent. To transfer this success to West Africa, the organisers are collaborating with GospelTown Africa, a Christian entertainment company.
According to the organisers, there are no restrictions as all Ghanaian universities are encouraged to enter their gospel choirs for the competition.
The launch of the event, which held early October, also witnessed the call for entries. Following the launch, the deadline for submissions is slated for November 2015. A shortlist will be announced a month later. The shortlisted choirs will then enter a boot camp audition by February 2016. Hosts for the event will be made known the public soon.
