Lesotho’s Kommanda Obbs unfazed by Metro FM loss
Lesotho artist Kommanda Obbs is not upset about not winning an award at the recently held Metro FM Awards in Durban, South Africa. The ‘Tsepe’ hitmaker was nominated in the One Africa Award category.
Obbs’ song ‘Ke Tauwe Fu’, which features South African rapper Stogie T, saw him competing against Tiwa Savage, Patoranking and Tekno – all from Nigeria – as well as Botswana’s Vee Mampeezy, who went home with the gong.
The South Africa-based artist told the Weekender that the nomination itself gave him the exposure he wanted.
“I was the smallest artist in that category in terms of popularity, but then I am glad that the award stayed in Southern Africa, especially in a country that speaks a similar language,” he said. "I told Basotho when the nominations were revealed that we should not regard ourselves as small, and Vee proved that by beating the more established Nigerians.
“The mere fact of being nominated has done so much for my career as it exposed me to different media platforms that will help broaden my fan base.”
Obbs said the nomination had given him the opportunity to meet Mampeezy. “I also managed to establish relations with Vee and we agreed to work together and all we have to do is formalise everything. It is a good move since it is a step towards working with different African acts, which will further put Lesotho on the map.
“I also landed a few international gigs starting in Durban on 26 May where I will be perform alongside Damien Marley from Jamaica and also at the Swaziland’s Bushfire Festival thereafter.”
The Metro FM Awards were met with controversy, with some musicians, politicians and fans describing the event as fraudulent. The awards were dominated by artists signed to Mabala Noise, a record label owned by ANC Youth League national treasurer Reggie Nkabinde and DJ Bongz. Artists signed to Mabala who won include Riky Rick (Best Hit Single), L’vovo (Best Kwaito Single), Kelly Khumalo (Best Female Album), Du Boiz (Best Music Video) and Musa Sukwene (Best African Pop Album).
