Lira, Lady Jaydee to join Nyota Ndogo at Kenyan festival
South African singer Lira and Tanzania’s Lady Jaydee will be sharing the stage with taarab-influenced Kenyan pop musician Nyota Ndogo at Koroga Festival in Nairobi on 19 March.
Presented by local radio station Capital FM, the festival will be held at the Arboretum Gardens from 12pm to 7pm. Also on the line-up are Kenya’s DJ Protege and DJ Andre’ The Addiction.
Now in its 16th edition, Koroga is a bimonthly event that was designed to celebrate notable African artists. The event is expected to draw a big crowd, considering the well-known musicians booked for the 19 March edition.
Headlining Koroga Festival, Lira is a multi-platinum selling artist in South Africa. She has won 11 South African Music Awards for her music, which is a mixture of soul, funk and jazz. She draws her inspiration from Miriam Makeba, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin and Nina Simone. Lira entered the South African music scene in 2000 and has released six studio albums, most notably Feel Good, Rise Again and last year’s Born Free. With such a rich musical background, the ‘Mali’ hitmaker is expected to be a favourite among Kenyan festivalgoers.
This is not the first time a South African artist has performed at Koroga. Last year, well-known duo Mafikizolo thrilled Nairobi fans with their Zulu and Sotho music.
Lira’s Tanzanian counterpart, Lady Jaydee, will entertain the audience with her R&B, zouk and Afro-pop compositions. Real name Judith Wambura Mbibo, Lady Jaydee is a Tanzania Music Awards winner who has performed at prominent concerts across Africa. She featured in season 1 of the Coke Studio Africa where she performed hit songs such as ‘Joto Hasira’ and ‘Yahaya’. She has also worked with Malian great Salif Keita.
Completing the trio is Nyota Ndogo. Real name Mwanaisha Abdalla, Ndogo is a winner and nominee of various music awards. She is a three-time nominee of the 2008 Kisima Awards and was nominated in the best Kenyan female artist category at the 2007 Pearl of Africa Music Awards and the 2007 Tanzania Music Awards.
