Nasty surprise for South African rapper
Earlier this week, Music In Africa reported that Nasty C was topping the nominations list of the South African Music Awards (SAMAs) with six nods. Now two of the rapper’s videos have been disqualified from this year’s edition.
The videos for ‘Good Girls’ and ‘Don't Do It’ will no longer be in contention after the SAMAs and the Recording Industry of South Africa (RiSA) received a number of enquiries about the timing of the videos’ release. According to the competition rules, the videos had to be aired on national television before 31 January in order to qualify for the awards. This led the event organisers to launch an inquiry into the matter.
“Our investigations have revealed that the videos were submitted for entry on 24 January 2017,” they said. “We have further determined that the videos were not flighted before the closing date of the entries of 31 January 2017 as required by the SAMA rules. In light of this, the two music videos are automatically disqualified because they do not meet the criteria for the Best Music Video category".
The organisers also apologised for the reversal: "We have always trusted that all music videos submitted for this category to us have already been aired by broadcasters during the specified entry period of the SAMAs entries. This case has proven us wrong and we accept full responsibility for our oversight to further verify whether the music videos submitted for this category were in fact aired during the relevant SAMAs entry period."
They also said replacement nominations for the Best Music Video Award would be announced soon.
In light of this development, Nasty C now sits on four nominations thus automatically making Kwesta, who has a total of five nods, the top contender. Amanda Black is the other artist who has four nominations.
