Nigeria's unmissable concerts November 2014
A brief summary of the biggest musical concerts in the Nigerian music space, in the month of November 2014.
As the year draws to a close, the frenetic pace of the Nigerian music events calendar rather than letting up, is accelerating to what promises to be a explosive crescendo. Music in Africa has compiled a list of five of the best of the best. These events are scheduled to hold in-spite of difficulties encountered as a result of the recent Ebola disease scare and here they are:
a.The Lagos Jazz Series Festival: 28-30 November 2014
In its fourth year, the Lagos Jazz series concerts have earned a well-deserved reputation, as Nigeria’s foremost International Jazz concert. The event has over the year’s hosted legends like, Bob James, Marcus Miller, Ola Onabule, Seun Kuti, Chuck Loeb and many more. Last year’s event also featured several mainstream acts, experiment with Jazz and Big band formats. Notably, M.I.Abaga, conducted a Big Band as well as playing a mean Jazz Piano solo.
The 2014 event promises to be another blockbuster, with a brilliant array of stars, largely home-grown, but with the International influence of the two headline acts, Ola Onabule and Cape Verdian superstar- Lura. Other highlights include the return of Nigerian superstar Orlando Julius. Also in a surprising coup, the concert shall witness the return of one of Nigeria’s iconic bands- Wrinkar’s Experience. Over 20 artistes shall be featured in the three day concert holding at two venues- the Muri Okunola Park and the Federal Palace Hotel, both in Victoria Island, Lagos. b.The Bogobiri Festival 27-30 November 2014
The Bogobiri House is one of Nigeria’s most vibrant, multi-faceted cultural hubs. Offering a mixed grill of visual arts, music, poetry and more on its standard menu. The Bogobiri Festival in its 2nd year has hosted a powerful line-up of International and local stars, such as Keziah Jones, The William Onyeabor album launch. Chimurenga and many more.
This year’s event shall be headlined by Nigerian Afrobeat star Wale Ojo and his band the Nigerian Milagro. Other acts shall include Francis Goldman, singer Empress, the Highlife All-Stars and Freedom Hall, conducted by Spoken-Word Poet, Titilope Sonuga.
c.The Afropolitan Vibes Concert 7pm 21 November 2014
The November edition of the Afropolitan vibes concert is scheduled to hold in the iconic surroundings of the Freedom Park, Lagos. This is shaping up to be the biggest of the concert series for the year. On the line-up is the legend of Nigerian music and Art, Jimi Solanke, performing his inspiring blend of Highlife and Afro-soul. Also, International superstar Wunmi, formerly of London’s legendary Soul2Soul ensemble makes a much anticipated showing in her home country. Also featuring will be Afro-Soul singer i-Mike. As usual the event is hosted by Afro-Hip-Hop icon, Ade Bantu, whose band’s tight rhythms and melodies will be the bedrock, upon which the musical feast shall be laid.
