Rhythmic Reading & Writing

Anita Asaasira from the Bayimba Music Academy in Uganda explains Rhythmic Reading and Writing. Illustrating some of what was learnt at the Global Music Campus, she joins musicians from Kenya, Mozambique, Malawi, Madagascar and Germany to clap and count together a 4/4 bar, syncopated 8th note rhythm in 2-part counting. They then repeat the exercise with a swing feel. To better illustrate the swing feel, the musicians then repeat the exercise again, counting in three syllables ‘du’, ‘depp’ and ‘da’ instead of clapping.

Filmed at the Cape Gate MIAGI Centre for Music in Jabulani, Soweto, South Africa in September 2013 by the Global Music Campus for Music In Africa.
