SA’s Standard Bank Joy of Jazz Festival to host workshops for music students
Some of the world’s top jazz international artists are expected to address hundreds of music students and jazz enthusiasts in a series of music workshops scheduled across the Gauteng province in South Africa.
Organised by the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz Festival, the workshops will take place from 15 – 19 September. Artists expected to share their knowledge at this initiative include US artists Bob James, Houston Person and Kendrick Scott; Canadian jazz vocalist, musician Ranee Lee, U.S. born and Spain based Deborah Carter, Paul van Kessel from Netherlands and Ntjam Rosie who was born in cameroon and now based in Netherlands.
The Standard Bank Joy of Jazz Festival proper will take place from 14 – 17 September at the Sandton Convention Centre in Sandton, Johannesburg.
Producer of the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz Festival, Mantwa Chinoamadi said: “Through initiatives such as these music workshops, we hope to not only expose local youth to the crème de la crème in the jazz fraternity but also broaden their minds by offering a different perspective well beyond our shores.”
The workshops will include panel discussions, master classes as well as lectures. Each artist will tackle pertinent issues—ranging from honing one’s musical skill to brand positioning and managing oneself as a business—in two-hour sessions.
Bob James is a two-time Grammy Award-winning smooth jazz keyboardist, arranger and record producer whose career began in the early 1970s. He is renowned as one of the founders of smooth jazz. His countryman Houston Person is best known for his work in soul jazz and his distinctive sassy sound. Kendrick Scott is a jazz drummer, bandleader and composer. He is the founder of the World Culture Music Record Company.
Students will benefit from Ranee Lee’s rich musical writing. She wrote and starred in Dark Divas, The Musical, a tribute to the lives and careers of seven of the most popular female jazz singers of the 20th century.
The event is a follow up to the success of the annual Geleza Kleva and Learn workshops which featured local jazz luminaries such as Sibongile Khumalo and Judith Sephuma.
All of the workshops are open to the public. Those wishing to attend must, however, make prior arrangements with the host venues. For more information about these workshops, kindly contact Vivian on +2711 051 8708 or send an email to vivian@khanyapr.co.za
