SA's Sibikwa Arts Centre looking for young female choreographers

The centre is looking for three young female choreographers and one performing artist who will be given the opportunity to create new work ranging from 20 to 30 minutes. The work will be showcased during Sibikwa’s Dance Season at the Dance Factory in Newtown, Johannesburg on Saturday 22 October.

The call aims to focus on female participants thereby commemorating the 16th anniversary of the Women’s March to Pretoria. As such, the Sibikwa Arts Centre will initiate special short skills vocational training and create plays which are relevant to girls and young women.

This is an opportunity where young female choreographers and performing artists create new work and showcase it at the Dance Factory.

Sibikwa Arts Centre is an award winning multi-disciplinary holistic arts and culture service provider. Founded in 1988, the center is known for providing services such as vocational training in the performing arts, arts education, community development through the arts and the creation of innovative South African performance pieces.

Who can apply

Any young female choreographers and performing artists who are aged between 20 and 35 can apply for this new choreographic programme.

The call is for choreographers in the following categories:

1. Emerging artists: recent graduates of a tertiary training programme with a focus on dance, 1 to 3 years of professional practice and having presented work on at least one public platform
2. Young artists: graduates of a tertiary training programme with a focus on dance 3 to 5 years of professional practice and having presented work on at least 2 public platforms
3. Established artists: over 5 years of professional practice and having presented work regularly on national public platforms
4. Performance artists: 1 to 3 years of professional practice and having presented work on at least three public platforms.

There is a commission fee for each category but given the nature of the commission, the choreographers should think in terms of one to three dancers. Preference will be given to choreographers and performance artists who include female dancers in their ensemble.

Interested participants should send their CV, short video clip of work, three photos of previous works, a reference letter from someone within the industry and any press clippings. All materials should be sent to projects@sibikwa.co.za before Monday 15 August 2016.
