Sauti za Busara receives Swiss support
The Embassy of Switzerland has contributed over TZS 260 million ($116 300) to support the Sauti za Busara music festival for the next three years.
The Swiss Ambassador to Tanzania, Florence Tinguely Mattli, met with the Chairman of the Busara Promotions Board of Trustees, Simai Mohammed for the handover at the Swiss Embassy offices in Dar es Salaam on 3 February.
The Sauti za Busara festival is one of Africa’s leading music events, and it has reported that it generated over $70 million in revenue for Zanzibar since it began in 2004. The annual festival's mission is to increase visibility and accessibility for African music, develop skills and opportunities for those in the music industry and strengthen regional and international networking and partnerships.
Mattli had this to say about the festival: “Switzerland has been promoting and supporting various initiatives and events within the arts and culture sector in Tanzania for over a decade now."
“The Sauti za Busara festival is a good example of a cultural event that brings people together to enjoy the arts while contributing to economic development.”
Busara expressed appreciation for the support. “The sustainability of most cultural organizations in Africa has mostly depended on support from donors. The support from the Swiss Embassy is a huge boost for this great festival."
The 14th edition of the Sauti za Busara music festival will be held from 9 - 12 February 2017 at the Old Fort in Stone Town, Zanzibar.
This year, the four-day festival pass for Tanzanians is 20,000 TZS ($9) or 6,000 TZS ($3) per day. African passport holders pay 120,000 TZS ($60) or 50,000 TZS per day ($25). Tickets will be available at the Old Fort starting Tuesday 7 February, from 10am.
