South African diva to perform in Munich
Nomfusi Gotyana will be performing in Munich, Germany, tomorrow night as part of a tour to promote her new album. The performance will take place at the well-known Ampere live venue where the South African singer is expected to impress the audience with her upbeat Afro-soul compositions.
Nomfusi’s tour kicked off in Wiesen, Austria, on 4 March. Since then she has also played in the German cities of Freiburg, Mühldorf, Hannover, Bremen and Münster. After tomorrow’s show in Munich, the African star will move on to Neubrandenburg, Hamburg and Berlin’s famous Bi Nuu concert venue on 19 March. More dates will be announced on her Facebook page soon.
Nomfusi’s new album, African Day, showcases the diminutive singer’s vocal range and unwavering personality. In her latest offering she combines the everlasting Motown sound with Johannesburg’s Sophiatown soul, and even adds the clicking sounds of her native Xhosa language to the title track, an energetic account of a typical day in the life of a South African.
"The beauty of African music is that you can tell serious issues quite easily," Nomfusi, who has lived through her fair share of “serious issues”, said. When she was 12 years old, her mother died of HIV/AIDS. So did her aunt and sister. With her father being a longtime convict, Nomfusi became a foster child and was treated violently by her new family. But Nomfusi possessed a great voice and an irrepressible desire to shape her own destiny.
"As long as I can remember, I have been singing in the yard, at school and in the church choir," she said.
Her talent was discovered when a local school principal granted Nomfusi a music scholarship. She was then taken under the wing of a producer and from there her reputation began to spread. During her ascent, Nomfusi played at the Lugano Jazz Festival in Switzerland and opened for Lionel Richie at Stimmen Festival in Lörrach, Germany. Her fame also took her to the big screen when in 2013 she portrayed Miriam Makeba in Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom starring Idris Elba.
African Day is the artist’s first European collaboration and features British-Caribbean singer Leee John of the soul band Imagination. The musicians supporting Nomfusi on her album and tour include keyboardist John Amoako, bassist Stefan Pfaffinger and guitarist Markus Escher.
Music In Africa will be present at the event as a media partner.
