Top Nollywood couple to present Lagos musical
Heartbeat: The New Beginning, a musical, opens in Lagos on Thursday 10 November 2016 at the Muson Centre, Lagos.
Heartbeat is a story about a shelter for the homeless called Grace House that finds itself in the middle of a battle between warring forces in its local government area while preparing for its 25th anniversary.
The musical, which incorporates afro pop, highlife, and traditional theatre music, explores “Love, Hate, Betrayal, Family, Identity, Politics, Homelessness and social justice through the characters who converge in and around Grace House in search of Refuge and Atonement,” according to a statement by its organisers, the Lufodo Academy of Performing Arts (LAPA).
The LAPA is a performing arts educational institution owned by Joke Silva and Olu Jacobs, a respected acting couple in the Nigerian film industry. While Silva is an award-winning Nigerian actress, director and producer, with credits both on stage and screen in a career spanning over three decades, her husband, Olu Jacobs, is an alumnus of the Royal Academy of Dramatic arts, London.
Jacobs has had a career in theatre, film and radio spanning over 50 years, including works for Universal Pictures, MGM, Walt Disney, and the Royal Shakespeare Company among others.
Heartbeat is directed by Najite Dede, and written by Tosin Otudeko and Debo Oluwatuminu. The music is directed by Efosa Lawal. Heartbeat also stars Femi Jacobs, an actor and singer who is popular for his roles in Film and TV productions such as ‘Tinsel’ and ‘The Meeting’. The show runs from 10 November to 18 December 2016.
