Tunisian singer Mathlouthi to release new album
Tunisian artist Emel Mathlouthi, known for her role in the 2010 Arab Spring, will release her second album Ensen (Human) in February 2017.
The album contains 11 songs and was recorded across seven countries and two continents, including Reykjavik, Stockholm, rural France and New York City.
In keeping with Mathlouthi’s activism, ‘Ensen Dhaif,' a four-minute track on Ensen, is dedicated to the people who have to struggle so that a very small percentage of the population can enjoy power.
Mathlouthi, who is currently on a European tour, was born in Tunis where her music was not played by the official channels. Instead she rose to prominence through social media, with her 2012 debut album, Kelmti Horra (“My word is Free,”) attracting praise from critics and fans for her powerful vocals backed by a unique mix of north African rhythms and modern electronic beats.
The singer has worked with four different producers on her new album, one of whom is the one-time Björk collaborator Valgeir Sigurðsson. Release of the new album will be preceded by live shows in the US and Europe.
Dates for her ongoing European tour are as below:
- 01.11: Oslo World Music Festival, Oslo, Norway
