Young SA musical duo launches a debut single
A South African musical duo, Zama & The Alan, yesterday Thursday, 24 November launched their debut single at The Plat4orm, Newtown (Carfax) in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Tilted ‘Mayebabo’, the Single was released on iTunes together with an exclusive screening of the video of the song. ‘Mayebabo’ expresses the anguish one feels when going through internal pain which can’t be put into words. Sung in Zulu and Shona languages, the single is a fusion of traditional African sounds with an alternative rock, jazz, soul and pop.
Zama & The Alan is a Johannesburg based duo made up of Msinga (KwaZulu Natal) born vocalist, composer and songwriter Zama Madondo and Zimbabwean born guitarist, producer and composer Alan Kupeta.
New to SA’s highly competitive musical scene, the duo has since made recent appearances on popular local TV show Rhythm City, YFM’s Live N Reyired and SABC 1’s Mzansi Insider. The band also partnered with local music publisher Sheer Publishing. The same Publisher has also worked with renowned artists Lira and Oliver Mtukudzi.
Zama and Alan met through a mutual friend and then decided to start a band in February this year after performing together at a concert. Since then, the two young musicians started performing at many concerts and festivals.
Sheer Publishing’s Senior Creative Liason, Zweli Sisilana, immediately signed the duo when he heard their single. He had this to say about their music, “I come across two standout bands a year and Zama & The Alan are definitely one of those two bands. Their song ‘Mayebabo’ is a classic in my opinion.”
