Daddy Fresh shines at 'Reggae Night' Lagos concert
On Sunday 14 August, reggae lovers gathered in Lagos to witness the 4th edition of the monthly 'Freedom Park Reggae Night with Covenant Child' concert.
The event, organised by the record label Ital Sounds System, Freedom Park and Shimmers Production Services, was held at Freedom Park, also the venue for Afropolitan Vibes concert. Budding reggae artists performed at the event, while Daddy Fresh, a reggae artist popular in the 1990s was billed as the main event.
The older artist performed his new song ‘Winchy Winchy’, and then did some freestyle and took part in a riddim clash. His performance was well received, with the organisers conceding that Daddy Fresh took their own artists—Big Man, Nature Banton and Gilo Ranking—“to school.”
In fact, Daddy Fresh, who was in a group with Daddy Showkey, has spoken about younger artists in an interview. “Most of the present day artistes want to dance and make girls shake their bum bum,” he said. “I’m not against that since its part of entertainment but let us also pass some positive messages into the society and pass knowledge to people.”
Speaking about the future of his genre, he added that he had “acquired a club and will be naming it Club Fresh which will be used to enhance reggae music.”
Femi Silva, another reggae artist with some pedigree, also showed his skill as a dancehall artist. But Daddy Fresh was the man of the day, serenading the audience with the voice that made him a star in his youth. Along with his original songs, he also performed covers.
The next Freedom Park Reggae Night with Covenant Child, will take place on Sunday 11 September. Time: 6 - 11pm. Venue: Freedom Park Lagos. 300 naira ($1) park entry fee applies.
