President Barrow pledges to support Gambian music
President Adama Barrow has said his government is committed to creating the right environment for the promotion and development of the Gambian music industry.
Barrow made the remarks recently during talks with ST Da Gambian Dream (also known as ST Brikama Boyo and ST Singhateh), one of Gambia’s famous pop acts.
“You need to remain focused, responsible and committed to always breaking new ground in your music,” Barrow said.
“With the right environment, you can take your music to high levels and make it a successful enterprise for yourself and the country.” He added that his government would work on policies to help the industry.
Barrow congratulated the Brikama-based artist on the successful launch of his album in late 2018. The event has been described as the single biggest gathering by a Gambian artist and won ST Da Gambian Dream a trophy at the just held Wah Sa Halat Awards.
The artist told the State House Press Corps that he was at the presidency to draw Barrow’s attention to the challenges Gambian artists were facing. The president, he said, was amenable to solving these challenges and to support Gambian artists.
“We have seen a lot of artists who will rise up but end up with nothing,” he said. “So I think it is high time we put Gambian artists in the spotlight and devise ways to develop their industry.”
