Suhayl Essa
Bio
Suhayl Essa is a doctor with a funny bone. He began stand up comedy 6 years ago, performing at gigs across South Africa. With his magical singing voice and commentary on pop culture he will leave you breathless.
Suhayl has made his mark on stages like the Space Theatre, Pop Art Theatre, Kitcheners, Ozone in Soweto, Comedy at Mishmash, Pretoria, Parkers Comedy Club and the Goliath Comedy club. Since then, he has performed across South Africa on stages in both Durban and Cape Town.
Suhayl has featured on multiple Comedy Central shows as well as Kagiso Lediga's new show with Hugh Masakela: "The Bantu Hour". After a mere 2 shows he was introduced to a legend and thus became one of the opening acts for Riaad Moosa's one man show: "Doctor's Orders". More recently, Suhayl has opened for Best Comic of the Year Carvin Goldstone in Durban as well as two time Emmy nominated comedian Loyiso Gola at the Grahamstown Arts Festival. Another highlight includes becoming a finalist in the Comedy Central Grab the Mic competition at Parker's Comedy Club. This caught the attention of comedy legend David Kau who invited him to join his crew of South Africa’s finest comedians on the Blacks Only nationwide tour in 2019. DJ Fresh witnessed his performances at these shows and requested his performance at the Oh Ship festival later that year.
In September 2017; Suhayl travelled to London to dazzle audiences at various clubs which included the world renowned Backyard Comedy Club as well as Up the Creek Comedy Club.
With Sne Dladla, a musical genius using electronic beats to create urban rhythms, as his producer. This dynamic duo will find you laughing and clapping at the same time.
As a newcomer, he finds that comedy is a creative outlet to express himself and speaking in third person is acceptable when writing a biography about oneself. He firmly believes that laughter is mostly the best medicine.
