Bongeziwe Mabandla releases video for Bambelela Kum (4.6.18)
South African musician Bongeziwe Mabandla on 5 May released a live video for ‘Bambelela Kum (4.6.18)’.
The song is off the SAMA-winning artist's latest album iimini, and captures the essence of human relationships through a meditative guitar and voice incantation.
The video, which draws on the simplicity of the song, was shot in France by Mozambican musician and producer Tiago Correia-Paulo (340ml, Tumi and the Volume) during Mabandla’s 2019 European tour.
Mabandla says the song is his most prized composition on iimini. "'Bambelela Kum (4.6.18)' is my favourite song on the album. It’s a simple song with very few words but it means a lot to me,” Mabandla said.
“I wrote it about always fighting with someone you care about and the conflict that this brings. Sometimes you are with someone that truly understands you and that gives you the sense of belonging, but it does not always guarantee that you won’t still hurt each other. It’s about holding on through the difficult times because you love each other.”
Iimini, which is Mabandla’s third album, narrates a compelling love story fused with folk, indie and electronic elements. The 12-track album reached No1 on iTunes South Africa when it was released in March.
