Call for registration: Nyanga Arts Festival music business workshop in Zim
The organisers of the inaugural Nyanga Arts Festival are inviting artists and music stakeholders to register for a music business workshop that will be held in Nyanga, Zimbabwe, on 26 October.
The workshop is among the activities that will be featured at the festival, which will be held in the country’s Eastern region from 27 to 29 October. The festival presents itself as a robust package, offering not only music performance but also exhibitions, tourist excursions and masterclasses for music professionals.
The masterclass has been made possible courtesy of Nhimbe Trust and Music Crossroads Academy Zimbabwe, in partnership with Music In Africa Foundation’s Sounds Connects Fund. It will feature music business concepts from the Music Crossroads Academy curriculum in an effort to impact the visibility of Zimbabwean music around the globe.
An insight into the programme
The day will begin with an introduction to a music business session facilitated by Melody Zambuko, director of the Music Crossroads Academy Zimbabwe. The session will be followed by a double bill facilitated by Sam Mataure, the renowned drummer and former manager of the late Oliver Mtukudzi and his Black Spirits band. A seasoned artist in every sense, Mataure, who has also worked with Thomas Mapfumo and the late Miriam Makeba, will discuss band and tour management, music education as well as tips for sustainability in the music industry.
Nhimbe Trust policy practitioner Lisa Sidambe will host a two-hour workshop on Music Decent Work (MUDEWO). During her session, she will discuss collaborations made by Music Crossroads Academy Zimbabwe and Nhimbe Trust to develop a global monitoring programme that reports developments, inspires dialogue between sectors, and informs national policymaking on decent work. In addition, Sidambe will examine compliance and violence in the music industry and reflect on ways to uphold professional conduct with musicians in attendance.
“The strategic thinking behind the workshop content is an effort to reaffirm the creative industry as a versatile one and to conscientise artists to not only think of themselves as performers but also to improve their professional conduct which will increase their potential to monetise the various stages of the industry value chain,” the organisers said.
