Uganda’s Navio to stage 'Njogereza' Concert
On Friday 9 September, celebrated Ugandan hip hop artist Navio will stage his first concert in two years at the Garden City Rooftoop.
Dubbed 'Njogereza' after his single of the same name, the concert follows his 2014 Kati Kati Gardens concert.
One of the most commercially succesful hip hop artists in Uganda, Navio (real name, Daniel Kigozi) will be joined by other artists from his original group Klear Kut as well as guests such as Ziza Bafana, Keko, Gravity Omutujju, Mun G and Maro.
In April 2016, Navio released the single ‘Njogereza’ too much acclaim. The song adopts Uganda’s new musical style named bax reggae, which is taken from Bakisimba, Ugandan traditional music and dance. 'Njogereza', which loosely translates to 'sweet talk', is a mix of hip hop and traditional music.
"Hip Hop culture has been alive for over 50 years," notes a statement on Navio's YouTube channel. "Baganda Culture has been around for almost 2000. After hundreds of songs in the studio, it was only a matter of time before Navio paid homage to one of the most enduring forms of African music: his own. The Njogereza music video was directed by Shiloh and shot in the Entebbe Botanical Gardens with the aid of the Navcorp Films team."
The year has been busy for the artist. In February. he launched his album The Chosen in Nairobi, Kenya. The 14-track album is a blend of old and newer sounds. The Chosen features Uganda’s Keko and The Mith, London-based artist Silvastone, Mr. Blue from Tanzania, South Africa’s Khuli Chana and AKA, and Nigeria’s Ice Prince.
