National Arts Festival (Makhanda)

Out of the Red C is a one-hour-long Hip Hop set designed by C tutor J. It’s a one-man show intended to display the evolution of Hip Hop culture from a South African perspective, especially in the Eastern Cape. The songs curated for the set explore the effects of religion/spirituality, manhood and ubuntu.

The collective piece forms a story of how the society perceives a Hip Hop artist when he/she joins the culture, and some of the challenges artists are met with. It all adds up to the artist’s knowledge of self as they begin to shape their destiny through the choices that they make.

The work is storytelling, Hip Hop cultural education, and motivation, relayed by an Emcee who is well versed in the scholarship of Hip Hop culture.
