Khanyisile Mthetwa
Bio
Khanyisile Mthetwa is a multi award-winning flute player from South Africa. Khanyisile is the 2022 winner of 2 South African music awards. She won best classical/instrumental and the Whitestar best Newcomer awards. She rose to international acclaim when she became the first African awarded the prestigious Myrna Brown Scholarship by the National Flute Association of America. She is currently considered to be one of the leading flute players in the world and regularly performs at concert venues around the world.
She has served as principal flute of the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra since 2019. Mthethwa previously held the same position with the Eastern Cape Philharmonic Orchestra.
Praised for her rich, deep tone, dynamic power, and sensitive interpretation, Khanyisile is a champion of extended techniques in which she displays flawless virtuosity, as well as being a passionate ambassador for classical African music
Mthetwa won the 2019 Mbokodo Award for opera/classical music, which recognizes women who have shown leadership and excellence in the arts. Khanyisile is one of the rare classical musicians featured in Cosmopolitan Magazine, Sunday Times newspaper, ENCA morning news and News24. Ms Mthetwa currently holds a fellowship in flute performance from Trinity College of London. She was named a “Top Young South African” by the Mail and Guardian newspaper and is one of the leading virtuoso instrumentalists in Africa and throughout the world.
