The Johnny Clegg Tribute Show will feature a star-studded line-up of top South African artists including Msaki, Karen Zoid, and Sipho 'Hotstix' Mabuse, at the Johannesburg Botanic Garden in Emmarentia on 17 July.
The event, presented by Real Concerts in partnership with 947 FM and 702 FM, and marks the third anniversary of the late musician’s passing. Other artists expected to play are Cito, Sipho Mchunu, Soweto Gospel Choir, Just Jinjer, The One Who Sings (Zolani Mahola), Francois van Coke, Springbok Nude Girls and Majozi.
Other performers include Ross Learmonth, Kurt Darren, Arno Carstens, Jesse Clegg and the Johnny Clegg band. The line-up is said to be the biggest since Concert in the Park, which was held at the same venue. Additionally, there will be a dance tribute performed by dancers from Zululand and the local hostels.
“I am so happy to be included in this tribute to the late Johnny Clegg,” The One Who Sings said. “His legacy of what it is to truly be yourself has in no small way contributed to who I am today.”
Soweto Gospel Choir said: “We admired his talent, his mentorship and his friendship immensely, as he became part of our Soweto Gospel Choir family. We will always keep his legacy in our hearts.”
Johnny Clegg was widely known for his ability to unite people across all backgrounds and generations with his music. The proceeds from the event will be donated to the Click Foundation to support The Friends of Johnny Clegg charity which was established in December 2018.
The performances will start at 11am. Purchase tickets to the event here.
