SAMAs 2023: All the winners
The Recording Industry of South Africa (RiSA) announced the full list of winners of this year’s South African Music Awards (SAMAs) at SunBet Arena in Pretoria on 18 November.
Kabza De Small was the biggest winner with four awards for Best Produced Album, Best Amapiano Album, Best Kwaito Album and Best Duo/Group of the Year alongside DJ Maphorisa.
Following with three trophies was gospel singer Ntokozo Mbambo who walked away with Female Artist of the Year, Album of the Year and Best Contemporary Faith Album awards. AKA was posthumously awarded with the Male Artist of The Year Award and Best Collaboration Award for ‘Lemons (Lemonade)’ featuring Nasty C. His album Mass Country scooped the Best Engineered Album Award.
Amapiano sensation Myztro was named Newcomer of the Year for ‘2.0 Nkwari’ while Makhadzi won the Best Traditional Album Award for African Queen 2.0. Mörda cemented his brand as a solo artist and a true performer, winning in the Best Dance Album and Remix of the Year categories for ‘Ndinovalo’ jointly with Yallunder. Lloyiso’s Seasons won him the Best Pop Album Award.
K.O’s ‘Sete’, featuring Young Stunna and Blxckie, emerged tops as the SAMRO Highest Airplay Composer Award and CAPASSO Most Streamed Song Award. Wouter Kellerman, Zakes Bantwini and Nomcebo Zikode were each honoured with the International Achievement Award for their remarkable track ‘Bayethe’, which earned them a Grammy in February.
Lifetime Achievement Awards went to Mandoza (posthumous), Ihhashi Elimhlophe, Gloria Bosman (posthumous) and Pops Mohamed for their outstanding contribution to the music industry. Mozambican saxophonist Moreira Chonguiça won the Rest of Africa Award for his album Sounds of Peace.
The first batch of winners – the non-broadcast categories – saw Nduduzo Makhathini win the Best Jazz Album while Khuzani won Best Maskandi Album. Dumi Mkokstad scooped Best Traditional Faith Album. The Beste Pop Album and Best African Adult Contemporary Album went to Bernice West and Nathi, respectively.
