Spotify Wrapped: Black Sherif is Ghana’s most streamed artist
For the second year running, Black Sherif has emerged as the most streamed Ghanaian artist on Spotify, according to Wrapped 2023, the company’s end-of-year round-up.
The report, released this week, spotlights the biggest songs and artists in Ghana while tracking the streaming habits of Ghanaians.
Black Sherif also topped the list of most searched artists, while his debut LP, The Villain I Never Was, also led the chart on the top streamed albums. Last year, the project rounded the year as the second most streamed album in Ghana. King Promise’s ‘Terminator’ claimed a spot as the most streamed Ghanaian song. Following closely were Black Sherif’s ‘Konongo Zongo’ and ‘Oil in My Head’.
A key takeaway from the report is the continued dominance of Nigerian music in the Ghanaian landscape. Topping the list of most streamed artists in Ghana is Nigerian act Asake, followed by Burna Boy. Black Sherif secured a third spot, while other Afrobeats stars like Davido and Omah Lay, as well as Canadian act Drake made it in the top 10 list. The most streamed songs are also from Nigerian artists, namely Ruger’s with ‘Asiwaju’ and Asake’s ‘Lonely At The Top’. Ayra Starr leads the pack as the most streamed female artist in Ghana and the only female artist in the top 10 most streamed artists, while Rema topped the list of most searched artists in Ghana.
Amaarae, Black Sherif, and KiDi lead as the most exported Ghanaian artists, captivating audiences worldwide with their unique styles and transforming their music into a cultural bridge that unites listeners across continents. Ghana’s most streamed throwback song is ‘Aben Wo Aha’ by highlife veteran Daddy Lumba. Other songs by Lumba, including ‘Akoma Da Akoma So’, ‘Menya Mpo’ and ‘Theresa’ also featured in the list.
“Spotify Wrapped 2023 unveils a nation that doesn’t just consume music but actively participates in a worldwide celebration of creativity, proving that with music, Ghana’s arms are wide open, welcoming the world to join in its musical diversity,” Spotify’s head of music for sub-Saharan Africa, Phiona Okumu, said.
Spotify is the world’s most popular audio streaming subscription service with a community of 574 million users, including 226 million Spotify Premium subscribers, in over 180 markets.
