SA: Thandiswa Mazwai to drop new single Kulungile
South African musician Thandiswa Mazwai will drop a new single titled ‘Kulungile’ on 12 April ahead of her upcoming album Sankofa set for release on 10 May.
The song features local pianist Nduduzo Makhathini and offers a glimpse into Mazwai’s forthcoming project. ‘Kulungile’ carries the profound message of overcoming past wounds and finding peace within. ‘Kulungile’, meaning it is well in isiXhosa, reflects on Mazwai’s journey, reminding her listeners that pain fades and wounds can be mended.
The release of the song sets the stage for Mazwai’s eagerly awaited album. To celebrate the album’s release, Mazwai will deliver a performance at Carnival City in Johannesburg on 11 May. The concert will feature tracks from Sankofa, but will also highlight Mazwai’s iconic debut solo album, Zabalaza. With ‘Kulungile’ and Sankofa, Mazwai continues to push boundaries and inspire audiences with her unique blend of music and message.
“‘Kulungile’ is about healing some of the traumas that we experience as children,” Mazwai said. “Many of us have faced rejection, abandonment and sexual violence. This song is for that child within that seeks justice, comfort and healing.”
Mazwai’s recent success includes her acclaimed Tiny Desk Concert, where she treated audiences to her raw talent and impassioned performance. During the concert, she dedicated the opening song to the “beautiful and ever-resilient people of South Africa.”
