Ghana: GHAMRO chairman to release single
The return of Ghanaian highlife man Rex Omar to recording music will take another step upon the release of a new song. Titled 'Highlife Agogo', the song will be available on 25 May.
Rex Omar, whose career in the music industry stretches across three decades, is currently head of the Ghana Music Rights Organisation (GHAMRO) and a member of the Joint Committee of Collective Management Organizations (JCCMOs).
As head of the organisation, Rex Omar has announced several initiatives to help Ghanaian singers obtain their royalties. After an announcement concerning a delay, the rights body finally shared royalties for December 2017 last month.
The forthcoming single is one more step in fulfilling a pledge made by Rex Omar recently. The highlife man announced online that he would release a new song each month over the next 36 months. At the end of three years, it is expected that the artist will have recorded material for several albums.
"My new song is a dance-floor filler with a dash of salsa to it," Rex Omar said, adding that his "choice of a salsa flavor for the tune follows the cosmopolitan influences on highlife, which draws heavily on the African vibes of our transatlantic kindred".
Rex Omar's mission to release "one banger, one month" began in April with the release of 'Nhyira', a mid-tempo track with gospel inflections, which followed a series of radio tours across a number of Ghanaian cities. And in keeping with Rex Omar's efforts at modernising his genre of music, 'Nhyira' featured rap delivered by Rex Omar's younger compatriot, hip hop act Trigmatic.
Although his music has incorporated influences from various places, Rex Omar has called for a protection of Ghana's cultural integrity, especially with regard to the spread of Nigerian culture through that countries artists.
"It is a cultural warfare out there," he said earlier in the year. "Nigerians will never open their market to you. A Nigerian businessman will never spend his money to promote a Ghanaian artist. Forget it."
