CANEX WKND 2024 to be held in Algiers this October
The African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) has announced the return of the 2024 edition of Creative Africa Nexus Weekend (CANEX WKND) that will be held at SAFEX in Algiers, Algeria from 16 to 19 October.
This year’s event promises to build on the success of previous editions, featuring a wide range of creative sectors, live performances, industry-leading speakers, masterclass sessions, and a fashion show.
CANEX highlights
The event further promises to develop conversations and provide unparalleled business-to-business and government opportunities. CANEX will be held under the theme One People, United in Culture, Creating for the World. It will kick off with the CANEX Music Factory, where hundreds of songwriters and beatmakers will converge at live recording studios within the CANEX exhibition. This year’s edition will also feature the launch of an album showcasing songs recorded during last year’s Music Factory.
The CANEX Music Concert will follow, embarking on a rhythmic journey across the continent with performances by Africa’s most dynamic artists, including Scorpion Kings (South Africa), Qing Madi (Nigeria), and Sofia Nzau (Kenya). Fashion enthusiasts will be treated to the CANEX Fashion Show, featuring 10 innovative designers from Africa and the diaspora unveiling their collections at Algiers Botanical Gardens.
A dynamic business-to-business exhibition area will offer creative brands and organisations exceptional opportunities to connect with international buyers. Meanwhile, the Gastronomy Showcase will ignite the senses with celebrated chefs from Africa and the Diaspora sharing their stories, expertise, and mouth-watering recipes.
Art lovers will delight in the stunning visual art installation at the National Museum, featuring iconic and emerging artists. The CANEX Book Factory Prize for Publishing in Africa will celebrate literary excellence, while the CANEX Shorts Awards Ceremony will recognise outstanding achievements in short-form content creation.
Masterclasses
CANEX WKND will feature masterclasses to tackle pressing topics in Africa’s creative industries, including Collective Disruption: Strengthening the Fashion and Textile Ecosystem, United in Culture: Prosperity through Shared Cultural Heritage, Globalised Strategies for Strengthening Intellectual Property Rights Protection, and From Production to Distribution: Resourcing An Evolved African Film & TV Industry.
The summit will launch the Pan-African Fashion Alliance, aimed at boosting creativity and supporting emerging creatives through collective action. Additionally, it will explore the importance of cooperation among global south countries and cultural organisations to promote content development, distribution, and performance opportunities across borders.
Experts will also discuss sustainable strategies for protecting creatives and creative organisations in global markets, culminating in the launch of CANEX Creations Incorporated. Furthermore, the summit will delve into the African film and TV industry, providing recommendations for effective content development, distribution, and support.
In the digital age, the summit will examine the impact of digitalisation on Africa’s creative economy, exploring ways to leverage technology for cultural product distribution and consumption..
