Tyla wins Best Afrobeats Award at MTV VMAs 2024
The winners of the MTV Video Music Awards 2024 (VMAs) were announced at the UBS Arena in New York on 11 September, with South African artist Tyla emerging top in the Best Afrobeats category against Nigerian musicians Burna Boy, Tems, Davido and Ayra Starr.
During her acceptance speech, Tyla described her win as “a big moment for Africa” and added that her hit single ‘Water’ made a global impact and was proof that “African music can be pop music too.
“Like this is just so special but also bittersweet, because I know there’s a tendency to group all African artists under Afrobeats,” she said. “African music is so diverse, it’s more than just Afrobeats.”
Meanwhile, Taylor Swift commanded the night with seven wins, tying for most overall, while Eminem dominated most solo male artist wins.
