Julanie J is a talented singer-songwriter from South Africa who has made a name in the Afrikaans pop and contemporary music scene. Originally from Cape Town, she now resides in Pretoria, South Africa’s capital. Known initially for her Christian music, she has since broadened her repertoire, blending pop and contemporary influences into her work.

Julanie’s career took off in 2016 with the release of her album Spirit Breakout, which soared on international charts within 24 hours, reaching the Top 20 on the iTunes International Chart and securing the 3rd spot on South Africa’s local charts. At just 21, she signed a major deal with Warner Music South Africa. In July 2019, she released her debut Afrikaans single, “Dalk is Ek,” quickly gaining recognition. People magazine hailed her as “South Africa’s new pop princess,” and Huisgenoot magazine highlighted her as an exciting newcomer.

In 2021, her hit single “Arm” dominated the JacarandaFM CTM Top 20 for nearly 10 months, holding the No. 1 position for an impressive 20 weeks. Since going independent in 2022, Julanie has been prolific, releasing five tracks and continuing to create new music. A skilled songwriter, she has penned songs for various artists, crafting introspective lyrics paired with melodies that resonate deeply. She says, “I am inspired by people’s stories. I love writing and strive to be observant. There’s so much happening around us, and by noticing the little details, life becomes more intriguing.”

Julanie has also used her platform for meaningful causes. In 2017, she became an ambassador for Ster-Kinekor’s Vision Mission, a charity initiative that supports children with visual impairments, an issue she understands firsthand. “Through my childhood experiences, I learned there’s still a stigma around wearing glasses,” she reflects. “I aim to use this platform to encourage kids to embrace themselves and wear their glasses proudly, empowering them to excel.”

Despite her growing success, Julanie remains down-to-earth, describing herself as “an ordinary girl who adores life, her family, and a good groovy bass line.” She is deeply rooted in her faith, community, and family, embodying a grounded approach to life and music.
