Lourens Fick

Bio

At age 5, Lourens started recorder lessons with Abrie Wentzel and two years later he began playing the piano in his home town of Paarl. During his school years, at Paarl Boys, he also received training in euphonium, flute and violin.

He frequently participates in competitions. He won the 2008 Johann Vos and Unisa South African Music Scholarship Competitions. In 2011, he won the Yamaha Key Performers of Note Competition and was selected as a semi-finalist in both the 4th and 5th Unisa National Piano Competitions. In 2013, he performed the South African premiere of Benjamin Britten’s Young Apollo, Op. 16 with the Academy of St Andrews Orchestra conducted by Barry Smith, described in Die Burger as ‘impressive playing’. He has performed as soloist with the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra, the University of Stellenbosch Symphony Orchestra and the Kwazulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra.

Lourens is currently completing his Master’s Degree in Music (MMus) at the University of Stellenbosch, specializing in piano performance under Bennie van Eeden, the acclaimed piano teacher and performer.

He is hoping to further his studies abroad with a view completing his Doctorate in Music. He aims to spotlight his incredible talent and through performance, raise funds in order to reach his dream.
