Akeine, born Laura Mujuni Blessing (on the 29th of June 1997) in Kampala Uganda is a Ugandan singer/songwriter, producer, live performer and creative.
The Afro-soul artist incorporates elements of jazz/blues, reggae and dancehall, RnB and folk to create her unique sound drawing influences from legends like Saida Karoli, Miriam Makeba, Aziz Azion, Jamal, Tove Lo, Timbaland, Brandy, Keri Hilson, Eryka Bhadu, Ace of Bass to mention but a few. This vast catalogue is what gives an edge to her sound.
Kicking off her writing at the early age of 10, Akeine new she was belonged to music scene and never dropped her pen since. She states that she was not as sure about singing until the age of 16 thinking she would take on the path of a song writer and producer alone. That changed after getting encouragement from her peers and understanding that only she could pull off her sound.
She released her debut single 'Wanted' in February of 2020 followed by a crowd favourite, 'Mpumuza' featuring Cxnrvd and Chxf Barry later in the same year. She spent the large part of 2021 collaborating with artists such as Wonder Jr, Kavali King, Joshua Baraka among others and studying music production that earned her an interview with international magazine 'OkayAfrica' all while she worked on her debut EP featuring renown producer, Axon. The 6 track self titled EP, Niwe Akeine was the released in February 2022 raising eyebrows of every ear that listened. To quote East African entertainment magazine, Tangaza;
"Her self-titled EP in collaboration with producer Axon does credit to her dedication. Though the EP is her debut effort, it boasts an excellence and maturity that has catapulted Niwe to the high ranks of the afrofusion scene in Uganda."
Akeine has since released 3 singles this year (2023) namely; 'Untold', 'Saving My Love featuring Kohen Jaycee and her latest, 'Better'.
She says she is currently in studio working on more singles, collaborations and an album (whose release date is yet to be mentioned) but in the mean time, she can be found gracing stages like The Patio, Kush lounge, Motiv among many others with her band, 'Bakeine'.
Her tuneful vocals can also be heard accompanying a plethora of songs like 'Sunset drift' by Ugandan Hip-Hop legend Navio, 'Snapbacks' by KSL Alpha and St.Nellysade, recently released 'Nyendi'we' by Kohen Jaycee which she also co-wrote and many more.
