Al Bilali Soudan

Bio

Al Bilali Soudan is an ancient name for the city of Timbuktu.

An improvisational tour de force of traditional rhythms and scales is presented by the music group. Their traditional stringed instrument is known as Tehardent, the Tamasheq name for their style. For centuries, the Tehardent has accompanied griots, bards, dancers, and singers. They are descendants of a well-known Tuareg family that has been performing this music for generations.

Group leader Abellow Yattara is a master of the instrument. Yattara's uncle, Aboubacrine Yattara, plays the bass tehardent. The group also includes Mohamed Ag Abellow, Tchiale Ag Aboubacrine, Mohamed Dicko, and Abdoulaye Ag Mohamed.

Their relaxed performance shows their ease with one another. Their work represents a renewed commitment to cultural preservation.
