Buntu
Bio
Buntu is Born from the electric pulse of Hillbrow’s streets, Buntu is a genre-defying music curator, and cultural architect. When they play music their sets are more than playlists, they are living archives of a neighbourhood where jazz whispers through taxi ranks, kwaito rattles apartment windows, and African folk melodies drift from corner shebeens. Buntu refers to themselves as a true sound scavenger, Buntu stitches together soul, jazz, and grassroots rhythms into riotous sounds that dance between nostalgia and rebellion. Their mantra, "Siphila nge ngoma" - "We live through music", this is not just a phrase, it is a survival tactic, honed in a community where music is oxygen. Buntu becomes Hillbrow’s translator: raw, rhythmic, and unapologetically alive. Every mix is a love letter to the block, a call to move, remember, and reclaim the stories embedded in the beat. Outside the decks, Buntu is a mother, a tutor, a mentor, and researcher groomed in the African Literature department of WITS University.
