Hilary Mwelwa

Hilary Mwelwa is a female artist born in Lusaka, Zambia. She moved to London with her family at the age of five. As a child, she adopted her father's love of traditional Zambian music along with such American, RnB, soul icons such as Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder. As a graduate of London's Westminster University, Hilary had early ambitions to go into the science field and earned a degree in biological sciences. While studying sciences, she started exploring her musical interests and decided to pursue music more seriously. She took a year off from school and began recording her debut demo. Hilary was never had a formal music training but was rather brought up on a diet of soul, RnB, gospel and pop music from an early age.

She developed into a professional singer and most referred to her as ‘The Next UK RnB Diva’. Together with Victor Redwood Sawyer (founder of hip-hop group Blak Twang), she formed a group called Hil St. Hil St. Soul is made up of Hilary Mwelwa and her musical partner Victor Redwood Sawyer (founder of the award-winning hip hop group Blak Twang). Hil St. Soul is one of the hottest groups to emerge from London’s underground music scene in recent years. Hil St. Soul has toured with artists such as Macy Gray, Angie Stone and D’Angelo. They released ‘Soul Organic’ (1999) which was followed by ‘Copasetik & Cool’ (2004) and ‘SOULidified’ (2006). Their third album ‘Black Rose’ was released in 2008 and showcases Hilary Mwelwa's trademark soul stirring, ultra-smooth and hypnotic vocals along with her poetic and self-empowering lyrics. Black Rose features songs such as ‘Gravity’, ‘Smile’, and ‘Ghetto’. In 8 August 2011, she released her first album as a solo artist titled ‘Bring Back The Love’.
