National Museum of Anthropology

Bio

Founded in November 1976, National Museum of Anthropology is dedicated to educating its visitors about Angolan history and culture. It features an array of traditional masks, art, sculptures, tools, weapons, jewellery, clothing, and music instruments. It is located in the neighborhood of Coqueiros. Built in the 18th century, it is the first museum created after the independence of Angola. It comprises of scientific, cultural and educational materials. It is dedicated to the collection, research, conservation, presentation and dissemination of Angola’s cultural heritage.

The museum has 14 rooms that are spread over two floors. These rooms house a permanent collection of traditional pieces such as agricultural tools, iron casting, music instruments, jewellery, pieces of cloth made from tree bark and photographs of the Khoisan people. There is a room of masks that shows symbols of Bantu people rituals.

It is open to members of the public from Monday to Friday at 09h00am until 12h30pm again at 14h30pm until 14h30pm.
