Nikki Laoye
Bio
Nikki Laoye (Oyenike Laoye-Oturu) is a Nigerian singer and songwriter. Born in 1980 in Lagos state, Nigeria, at age five, Nikki began taking dance and singing classes. She was given free piano lessons by a teacher who noticed her gift. She performed at several choirs in secondary school and at the University of Ibadan. At the university, she was a member of the gospel group Soul Sistas. The group separated after graduation and Nikki Laoye took up a solo career.
Her first single ‘Never Felt this way Before’ (2006) was producer by prominent producer Cobhams Asuquo, and turned the Nigerian audience to the possibility of contemporary Gospel. The single made it into her debut album ‘Angel 4 Life’ two years later. The album featured other Nigerian artists infusing a contemporary sound into gospel like Rooftop MCs and Jeremiah Gyang.
Nikki Laoye has performed soundtracks for several Nollywood films and has a spot on gospel radio station Praiseworld Radio. She won the Best Vocal Performance (Female) at the 2013 Headies.
