Peter Moyo

Bio

Peter Moyo is son to the late sungura music icon Tongai Moyo. Moyo was the leader of Utakataka Express Band. Peter took over the band prior to his father’s death in 2011. He is popularly known to his fans as “Young Igwe”, a stage name he inherited from his father ‘Igwe’. He ventured in the music industry before he passed on. Before he died, Tongai would let his son perform with him. He unfortunately died before his son gained experience. Fortunately, veteran gospel singer Charles Charamba gave him vocal lessons.

Shortly after, he began sharing the stage with renowned artists such as Oliver Mtukudzi and Alick Macheso. He started off by singing his father’s songs. In June 2013, he released his debut album ‘Mushonga Mukuru’. It was followed by the launch of the DVD version of the album. Despite the release of his album, he faced a lot of challenges in maintaining his father’s legacy. Some of the members who had played with his father deserted him. These include Spencer Khumulani, Gift “Shiga Shiga” Katulika and Gaison Sixpense. They joined another musician called Energy Mutodi.
