Royal Museum for Central Africa (RMCA)

Bio

Founded in 1897, Royal Museum for Central Africa (RMCA) is an ethnography and natural history museum situated in Tervuren, Belgium just outside Brussels. Previously known as the Africa Museum, it was initially built to showcase King Leopold II's Congo Free State in the 1897 World Exhibition.

It focuses on D.R. Congo, as a former Belgian colony. The focus of interest does however extend to the whole Congo River basin, Middle Africa, East Africa and West Africa, with an attempt to integrate the African continent. It was initially intended to be a colonial museum but from 1960 onwards, it has focused more on ethnography and anthropology. Not all research strictly relates to Africa as some researchers have strong ties with the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences.

According to its website, its collection contains approximately 8 000 music instruments and over 120 000 ethnographic objects.

As of November 2013, the museum was closed for renovation work (including the construction of new exhibition space) and is expected to last until May 2016 when the museum will reopen.
