Coptic (Eric Kwabena Matlock) is a New York based producer from Ghana. A well respected producer, he has worked with American artists like P. Diddy, the late Notorious BIG and Jermaine Dupri. In 2014, he signed Trey La, a Ghanaian rapper, to his The Black Star Line label as first artist.
Coptic was born in Kumasi and grew up in Accra and Awukugua. A music lover from childhood, his mother has said when he was a baby, he beat his grandmother’s pots. In Accra, however, he joined a band playing percussion instruments. He left his home country at 13 for the US.
In the US, his first production was sold to Puff Daddy. The beat was never used due to issues surrounding the death of BIG. Jermaine Dupri became the first artist to release a song with production from Coptic.
In 2016, he signed a deal for music distribution with United States distributor, eOne Music.
